what is ahead for the campaign this week. good morning, brian. >> reporter: hi, laura. well, it's not just what's ahead, it's what the romney campaign hopes is far behind in the rear view mirror. the last week, as you might have heard, not the greatest for the romney campaign. there was that 47% comment on the secretly recorded tape, there was his tax information that he released and really of course didn't do anything to please his critics. but the most important and the most troubling is that romney, according to the latest polls, is falling a bit behind in the battleground states. still plenty of time to catch up, but he's got to start doing it. the next debate -- the first debate, i should say, is nine days away. this is a chance for romney to really change the narrative, to introduce himself to the american people. he says he'd like to be in full-time campaign mode at this point but he's got to spend a lot of time in those fund-raisers, trying to keep pace with the president. laura. >> it is so interesting to watch as it get closer and closer. thank you, brian.
5:43 am
we're looking forward to those debates. let's just get it on. enough of the mud slinging, let's get down to business. weatherwise, what's the business? >> no debate, it's going to be nice as we kick off the first week of fall. this is some of the best weather we get all year long so enjoy it. as you know, it's going to be cold and rainy and it comes in quickly around here. it's a good time, though, to start thinking about getting that coat ready for the wintertime and think about giving your old coat away as people are in need this time of year. taking a live look outside, old glory blowing in the breeze. we also have the fog coming down and a cruise ship coming in for perfect weather today. onshore flow is robust enough to drop your visibility to a mile and a quarter up in santa rosa this morning. elsewhere we're looking ten miles or better except gilroy, seven miles there. your hour-by-hour forecast looks like this. starting out nice and crisp. 53 in livermore, 54 in sunnyvale. by noon temperatures will be

5:45 am
livermore using isabel interchange, toward isabel through city streets and towards highway 84 getting over to sunol. that will cut you around all of this problem of the backup approaching 680, southbound side, only the center divide is open because of an accident just before you get to stoneridge drive. bob redell is on scene and we should have an update with him in just seconds. meanwhile we'll show you the traffic show suggested by chp. continue west on 580, then fosoh on foothill road and back over on stoneridge drive back to 680 southbound. this is causing a big problem. allow perhaps 20 minutes extra if you're traveling from the north side of here through that backup and getting over past the scene of that accident. meanwhile the south bay moves smoothly. we'll check the peninsula, 101. an palo alto moves nicely. the lighter build for the peninsula side of the bay. easy flow through palo alto, through san mateo into the city. we'll look at foster city as well. as the approach comes off of the

part of the investigation, so the officer was telling us the safe bet would probably be an eta of 7:00 when this road is reopened. as you can see, all four lanes of the southbound 680 are shut down but they just opened up the far left shoulder. it's a very wide shoulder, so they are letting some traffic go through, but it's a trickle. you can see just how bad this backup has been that started -- happened around 3:30. so you've got a backup that extends north on the southbound lane of 680 and of course this affects the westbound 580 traffic that's trying to get on here. there are other detours. as far as the person who was hit and killed, it was a man. they don't know what this person was doing out here. there's no vehicle on the side of the road that appears to have been him. it's not somebody who had car trouble so it's not clear why this person was out in the middle of the road. and it was a driver in a smaller

car that hit this man. that person is cooperating. it was not a hit and run. this happened around 3:30 this morning. that body is still out there in the center lanes. the eta for reopening is roughly appear hour according to chp. again, if you have to get from the dublin area southbound to san jose, you are going to be held up right now or perhaps try to find another detour to 880 lorks i don't know that would be reasonable or worth your time. reporting live, bob redell, "today in the bay." there are some new safety and maintenance rules that will be in place for california's natural gas pipelines. the governor signing three new bills yesterday that ensures utilities do not cut corners on upgrades in order to give bonuses to executives. assemblyman jerry hill sponsoring this bill after the crestmore neighborhood in san bruno was devastated when a pg&e natural gas pipeline exploded back in september of 2010. hill will hold a news conference
